Helga Summerton, 94, Kokomo, died 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, at her daughter´s home in Greentown. She was born Nov. 21, 1913, in Sweden, the daughter of Karl A. and Alma B. (Hanson) Peterson. The family moved to Kokomo in 1927 and she became a U.S. citizen Jan. 25, 1940. Helga married Thomas Henry Summerton in 1934 and he died February 21, 1973. Helga was a 1933 Kokomo High School graduate. She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She later became a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. She served as postmaster of the Oakford Post Office from 1947 until 1977. She belonged to the National Association of Postmasters and was a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She began volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital in 1977 and was recognized and honored for over 30 years of volunteer service, continuing to volunteer even at the age of 94. She was a life member of the Hospital Cheer Guild and had been on the Dr. Watson Cataract Support Team. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Sondra Summerton, Greentown; three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Richard Weir, Kokomo, Sonja and Philip Powell, Greentown and Mary Ann and Michael Burke, Greenwood, S.C.; one sister, Britta Dunlap, Kokomo; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, her husband and one son, Carl Thomas "Tommy" Summerston, preceded her in death as well as one grandson, Christopher Lee Osborne, one sister, Margie Smith; and two brothers, Barry Peterson and Bert Peterson. A Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Thurday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Theodore Dudzinski the celebrant. Burial will follow in Crown Point Cemetery. The family will receive friends from3 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, ay Shirley and Stout Funeral Home, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church one hour before the Funeral Mass.
